I started collecting Funko Pops three years ago and I have about 80 of them, but lately I'm seeing a lot of stores offering crazy discounts. I'm wondering if it's still worth continuing or if the market is oversaturated. In your opinion, which lines still hold their value?
Don't buy thinking you'll resell them at full price in a few years - that's over. The market is definitely saturated - huge production runs, variants on top of variants, and people are getting tired of them. The discounts you see everywhere aren't random; they show that the initial hype has deflated quite a bit.
That said, if you actually love them and want them for your personal collection, the sentimental value hasn't gone down at all. The important distinction is between financial investment and passion: as an investment they don't work anymore, but as a hobby they're totally sustainable. The lines that still hold value best are ones tied to franchises that are still relevant (certain Marvel chapters, Star Wars for true fans, some rare exclusives from the golden days) and genuinely limited editions or ones with printing errors. But we're talking about holding value, not making a profit.
I'd keep going if I liked them, but with a lighter mindset. Accumulating just to fill shelves hoping for a financial return is silly at this point, but having a curated collection of pieces you actually love is a whole different thing. Maybe instead of always buying new, just get the ones that really make you laugh or that represent something you actually care about. Your 80 pieces probably tell a better story than 200 bought just for the sake of it.
The point that nobody ever brings up is how easy it is to end up with a collection you can't even give away. Stores put things on discount because their warehouses are packed with stuff that doesn't sell, and that happens precisely because Funko had obscene quantities of pretty much everything printed. If you start today hoping your pieces will go up in value in a few years, get ready to be disappointed - that door is closed.
That said, it's not like collecting is dead. If you actually love the characters and lines you're getting, keep them. Real limited editions (not the "limited variant" number 47 of the same figure), those first editions, and especially the lines that came out in the company's earliest years can hold their value, but we're talking about specific pieces, not everything you buy today. The first series of some franchises still have appeal, especially if they're in good condition and still in the box.
The real advice is this: keep going only if it's because you actually want those characters you love sitting on your shelf. Don't think of it as an investment. Pick carefully instead of buying everything you see, because the gap between "that one's actually worth something" and "that one you're giving to whoever wants it in five years" has become huge. And stay away from preordering variants - that's where even the most experienced collectors trip up.
