Radiators not getting warm - only air coming out the top

For about a month now I've noticed that my radiators in the apartment barely get warm anymore. Mostly just air coming out of the top instead of water. I've already tried turning the valves all the way, but that didn't help. What can I do myself before I call a tradesman?
