I had a similar situation with a camera in my hallway - the signal kept dropping, especially when someone walked between rooms. Usually it's a combo of several factors: walls weaken the WiFi signal, the camera might be more sensitive than other devices, or it just reconnects when the signal drops below a critical level.

First, try restarting the router itself (just unplug it for about five minutes), then move the camera closer to it for a couple of days and see if it disconnects as often. If the problem goes away - it's distance and interference from walls, and you need to find ways to improve coverage (move the router higher, remove obstacles, or even consider a second router if your apartment is large). If the camera keeps disconnecting even right next to the router, then it's the device itself - could be a faulty firmware, overheating, or power supply issues.

Also check in the camera's app whether power consumption requirements are too high (sometimes cheap models are unstable). Also look in the router settings to see if it didn't block the camera (weird thing, but it happens) and whether there's enough open space in the next room between the router and the camera.

Is the camera expensive or just a regular budget model? Because cheap ones sometimes glitch simply because they have a weak WiFi module - distance and walls have nothing to do with it. But if it's a decent one, the problem is more likely a dead zone between rooms. I once put a camera in my bedroom with the router in the living room, also through a wall - it kept disconnecting! It only helped when I moved the router higher up and reoriented the antennas. I'd also suggest checking if there are other devices nearby that are hogging the 2.4 GHz band (microwave, wireless speaker) - they seriously interfere with WiFi!

yuliya_tigr asker It's just a regular, cheap Chinese camera. The microwave happens to be right next to the router - could that be the reason?

Have you tried moving your router closer or at least reorienting its antennas? Here's another thing - check if there's a microwave or other devices operating on the 2.4 GHz frequency nearby, they can cause interference. If the camera keeps dropping out after that, then it looks like the problem is actually a weak Wi-Fi module on the camera itself, not the distance.

Try moving your router closer to the camera for a bit and see if it keeps disconnecting. If the problem goes away, then it's definitely a signal issue, and in that case it makes sense to either set up a repeater or relocate your router somewhere more convenient. If the camera still glitches even right next to the router, then it's the device itself - this happens a lot with budget models that just have a cheap WiFi module.
