I'd make it depend on the situation - if the employer asks you directly, then answer honestly, but give yourself a realistic buffer on the high end. If he doesn't ask, try to find out first what the position is worth and what others in the role are earning, then you can name a range instead of a fixed number. That way you've got more room to negotiate and at the same time you don't come across like you're trying to underbid yourself. 🤝

The best strategy is to ask first what range the employer has in mind - that way you're not the first one to throw out a number and you don't put yourself at a disadvantage. If he asks directly for your idea and doesn't dodge the question, name a figure you can realistically justify (experience, qualifications), but with that buffer on the high end that the other person mentioned. That leaves you room to negotiate without selling yourself short.
