I'm not really a crypto investor, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but it's true that you can't forget this stuff is super volatile and you could lose your money - so drop that idea right now that it's a "safe" investment. Between the two, ETH actually has a bigger user base and more apps built on it, so it's generally seen as less risky, while SOL is faster and cheaper on fees but it's still a younger network. If you really want to go for it, a lot of people diversify instead of putting everything into one, like 60/40 or fifty-fifty, just so you don't get totally wrecked if one of them tanks.

This is really something you need to personalize based on your risk tolerance. You say you've been following both networks - are you someone who can handle seeing your investment drop 30-40% without panicking, or do you prefer something more stable? Because that's what makes all the difference between the two.

Ethereum does have a larger user base and more established institutional adoption, so generally less volatility. Solana is true that it's technically faster and cheaper in fees, but you pay for that with some network instability and a younger community. 500€ isn't huge, so honestly before you pick one or the other, I'd ask myself a real question: do you actually believe in the technology of one of them specifically, or are you investing just "because it's crypto"? Because if it's the second option, you're taking a risk without really knowing what you're doing.

My personal advice is don't put everything on one side. But before that, tell me: how long can you leave this money locked up? And is this money you can actually afford to lose?

jean_joueur asker I can really afford to lose these 500€, and I have at least 3-4 years ahead of me. I believe more in Ethereum technically, but Solana appeals to me too.

The thing is, nobody can really tell you where the price is going in 6 months or a year. Both networks are working well, it's not like one is clearly "better" than the other in 2026. Solana does have fewer congestion issues, but that doesn't automatically make it a better investment - technology and utility are one thing, price is something completely different.

What you should really be asking yourself is: are you comfortable seeing your investment cut in half in a few months? Because with crypto that's possible, honestly. People who tell you "it's ultra volatile so be careful" are right on the fundamentals, except it's true for both. ETH has a bigger user base and more apps built on it, so there's an argument for saying it's "less risky" in theory, but crashes hit the whole market the same way in the end.

If you really have to choose and don't want to think about it every day, maybe split your investment and go with both instead of torturing yourself trying to guess which one will perform better. €500 is an amount where you can really afford to diversify a bit. Otherwise, read up a bit more on the concrete developments for each network over the past few months and see which one inspires more confidence in you - often that feeling is the most useful thing.
