I've gone through the same thing - cables getting beat up in a backpack or stuffed in a car cup holder will destroy them fast, and cheap ones just can't handle it. The real difference I've noticed is that braided cables (the woven kind) last way longer than rubber ones, and brands like Anker or Belkin tend to hold up better than generic stuff, plus you want to avoid super tight coiling which cracks the jacket.
