Betrayal at House on the Hill third edition was announced but ultimately cancelled. Avalon Hill had plans to release it, and there was real buzz about what changes might come to the classic game. The company showed off some previews and got people excited, but then the project got shelved before it ever hit retail.
The reasons weren't totally transparent, but board game projects get cancelled all the time for various reasons - sometimes it's sales projections, sometimes design conflicts, sometimes just shifting company priorities. What we ended up with instead was continued support for the second edition, which honestly is still plenty playable and has held up pretty well over the years. If you're looking to play the game, second edition copies are pretty easy to find and won't break the bank.
