I had that problem too a while back because I loved strong perfumes, but after several people made comments, I realized less is more. The difference between a perfume that's overwhelming and one that works is in the concentration and how you apply it. If you want something noticeable but not overpowering, go for an eau de toilette instead of eau de parfum. EDTs have lower fragrance concentration (typically 5-10% versus 15-20%) but still last pretty well if you use them right.
For the office especially, citrus, soft floral or woody fragrances tend to be way more elegant and less invasive. Try applying perfume to just one or two spots (wrists or base of neck) instead of several areas, and don't spray it directly on yourself - walk through the mist instead. If you want a touch-up after a few hours, one or two spritzes is enough. Also some perfumes are specifically formulated to have low projection but good sillage (that trail they leave without being overwhelming), so it's worth asking at the perfume counter or reading reviews before you buy.
