I looked into this quite a bit because I work with numbers and I don't like spending money on apps when there are decent options out there. What I found is that a lot of the "free with no ads" stuff you see in reviews have a catch - either they charge you after a while or the ads show up in certain modes they don't mention.
The most realistic thing is to look for apps that have genuinely functional lite versions. Some have ads but they only put them after you solve a certain number of puzzles, so if you play offline or in short bursts you don't see them that much. Others let you at least turn off notifications, which helps. In 2026 it's still pretty rare to find something totally without monetization - developers need to eat too. What I do is install a couple, see which one bothers me the least in the first month, and if it starts getting invasive I delete it. Sometimes older apps with fewer updates are less aggressive with ads because they're not being actively maintained anymore.
The trick that people who know use is checking the rating in detail - not just the overall score but recent comments about how the ads are right now. Because an app could have been clean six months ago and now be full of popups. And if you really want something without ads, paying a couple bucks for a premium app is cheaper than wasting time looking for the Holy Grail that probably doesn't exist anyway.
Don't expect to find a completely free riddle app with no ads, that's pretty much impossible in 2026, but there are some that have very little advertising or let you play offline without any ads. Are you looking for something specific like crosswords, sudokus or logic puzzles? because that changes the options quite a bit, there are apps that focus more on one type of game. In my free time I try to stick with the ones that have the option to download offline packs, so they don't interrupt as much while I'm waiting at a bus stop.

Go for the ones that have a one-time purchase instead of a subscription, like Puzzmo or some paid versions of classic apps, because at least you know you paid once and that's it. I use one I downloaded years ago and it still works offline, so when I'm waiting between calls in the ambulance I can play without using data or dealing with ads. Most decent apps in 2026 still have some kind of monetization, but the one-time purchase ones are the most honest.
After running this morning I was looking for something like this and honestly most of them have at least annoying ads or ask you to subscribe after two days! What worked for me was downloading some Wordle clone type games that independent developers upload to itch.io, totally clean, though obviously they're more basic than the big apps.
What I do is check the permissions that each app asks for before I download it, because a lot of them that claim to be free without ads actually track you like crazy and that bothers me way more than ads do. From my experience as a taxi driver I have time to try things out, and most of them end up being a scam or they put the ads in after a week once you're already hooked.
