I've got about 400 square meters of lawn and up until now I've been maintaining it with manual tools, but I'm getting tired of it. I'm thinking about buying a decent lawn mower but I'm not sure whether to get one that's battery-powered, gas, or electric with a cord.
For 400 square meters, a decent lawn mower is a must-have, otherwise you'll end up hating yourself every weekend. Among the three options, battery is honestly the way to go if you don't want to deal with hassle. A good model with a swappable battery handles that size perfectly, cuts quickly without wearing you out, and you don't have to mess with gas, spark plugs, or filters. The downside is it costs a bit more and you have to wait for it to charge, but with a 40-60V battery you're totally set.
A cord is torture for 400 square meters, honestly. You're dragging 50 meters of cable behind you, risking stepping on it, and even if your lawn is all connected it's just annoying. It's fine if you've got a small flower bed in front, but not for an area that size. Gas works though, it doesn't depend on battery, but it's loud, it makes maintenance messy, and if you leave it sitting for a few months there's a chance it'll jam up.
Also think about the brand and whether the battery mower is compatible with the ecosystem (meaning the batteries work with other tools too in case you need a string trimmer or leaf blower down the line). In the end, the time you save and the peace of mind from not getting your hands dirty is worth more than the extra money you spend. After years of using it, you might never even change it.
