Are you looking to replace one you already have, or just curious about the tech?
A regular thermostat is basically a mechanical or simple electronic device that turns your heating or cooling on and off when the temperature hits a set point. You dial it to 70°F and it stays there until you manually change it. A smart thermostat does that same job but connects to your wifi and lets you control it from your phone, set schedules, and adjust things remotely. Most of them learn your habits over time too - so they figure out when you're usually home or away and adjust automatically to save energy.
The real difference is in what you can do with the data and the automation. Smart thermostats usually show you detailed breakdowns of your heating and cooling usage, send you alerts if something seems off, and some can integrate with other smart home stuff. They're also way more precise about temperature control. The downside is they cost more upfront and need wifi to work fully (though they usually have a manual fallback). Regular ones are simpler, cheaper, and literally never break because there's less to break. Does your place get drafted a lot, or are you more interested in saving on bills?
