I've been trying to make bread at home for a while and I need decent whole wheat flour. I've tried Carrefour and Mercadona but the prices have been crazy lately. Does anyone know where to get it cheaper or if there's a brand that's actually worth it?
Ecological mills or bulk shops in many cities usually have much lower prices than regular distribution, and you also control the exact amount you need. It's also worth checking Amazon Fresh or directly on online bulk selling platforms, which sometimes have decent deals on larger formats. Biolasi brand or Carrefour Bio's own line (the organic range) have good value for money if you catch them on sale, though honestly any reasonably fresh whole wheat flour works fine for homemade bread, so don't get too hung up on the brand.
I recently started buying at a local cooperative in my area and the price difference is brutal compared to supermarkets. Whole wheat flour comes out at about half the price, and I can also buy just what I need without it sitting around for months. If you can't find a cooperative nearby, try health food stores or herbalist shops - even though they seem expensive, they have more affordable brands than hypermarkets and often give discounts if you buy in bulk.
Amazon or similar platforms can surprise you with competitive prices if you compare carefully, but here's the thing nobody mentions: check the packaging date, because sometimes they sell old stock and whole wheat flour loses quality faster than white flour, so you end up paying less but spending more because the dough won't rise properly.
