I have a Vaillant boiler that's about 5 years old and I want to install a smart thermostat to control it from my phone. I've seen several on Amazon but I'm not sure which ones actually work with my setup. Has anyone had success with a particular one?
The first thing is to check your Vaillant's documentation to find out what control protocol it uses. A lot of Vaillant boilers have OpenTherm connection, which is the most common standard in Europe, so that's what you need to confirm. If your boiler has it, you're already on the right track because most smart thermostats from well-known brands are compatible with OpenTherm. Some like Nest, Tado and Ecobee work well with Vaillant systems, but not all of them, so before you spend money you have to verify that the specific model is compatible with OpenTherm.
What I'd do is send a photo of your boiler's nameplate or the manual to a heating technician before buying. A lot of sellers on Amazon don't really know what's going to work with your exact setup, and you end up with a thermostat that doesn't work. Also, the installation itself can be tricky if you don't have electrical experience, so you'll probably need a professional to put it in.
A safer option is to contact an authorized Vaillant distributor in your area directly. They'll tell you exactly which thermostats are compatible with your model and sometimes they even offer installation. It costs a bit more than buying online, but at least you know it's going to work and you don't waste time or money on failed attempts.
