When we faced the question of replacing the thermostat in our house, I spent a long time choosing between popular models and consulted with a heating specialist. It turned out that for old systems, compatibility is the main thing - not having all the trendy features. Many smart thermostats require a neutral wire in the wall, which Soviet-era houses often don't have, so you need to find out in advance whether you have one. If there are still four wires (phase, neutral, ground, and control), then practically any modern model will work.
I installed a Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat that lets you control the heating through an app and set up a schedule. The main advantage is that you don't need to redo anything in your heating system - the thermostat simply replaces the old mechanical one. I recommend checking your boiler's documentation before buying: it usually says which types of thermostats are compatible. Some old gas boilers only work with simple models without electronics, and in that case you'll have to choose from more budget-friendly options with basic functionality.
Don't rush to get the fanciest model - for old heating systems, simple schedule-based control and phone monitoring are often enough. Check reviews specifically for compatibility with your system rather than the overall rating, because the perfect thermostat for a new house might simply not work in an old apartment.
What kind of system do you have - a gas boiler, electric, or something else? I agree that compatibility is critical, but people often overlook a hidden catch: even if the thermostat physically connects, old boilers might not understand digital commands and will operate in fits and starts instead of smooth modulation. Before buying, it's worth checking with the boiler manufacturer whether it even supports smart control - many models over ten years old require special adapters or are just incompatible altogether. If adapters are available and reasonably priced, then yeah, a smart thermostat makes sense; if not, it's easier to just go with a regular programmable one.
The main thing people usually overlook is the electricity issue. Old boilers often run on 24 volts, while modern smart thermostats require either a full 220V power line or batteries (but they drain quickly). If your boiler is really ancient, there might not be a control circuit at all, and you'll have to redo something in the wiring.
Before you buy, take the cover off your current thermostat and see how many wires go into the box. If there are two or three, you're in a more or less standard situation. If there are more or the wiring looks non-standard - it's better to call a technician for a consultation before picking a model. He'll tell you right away what will actually work with your boiler.
If everything's fine with the power and wiring, then yeah, go by the features you actually need. For old systems you don't need anything super advanced - usually the basics are enough: scheduling by day, remote control through an app if you want it. The pricier models with AI and weather analysis for an old boiler - that's overkill.
