Original DVDs are expensive because studios have to pay for licenses, physical distribution, and storage, plus demand dropped a lot once streaming became popular. When something is produced in smaller quantities, the per-unit costs go up, so prices stay high even though fewer people buy them. Plus, a lot of classic titles or limited editions just don't get reprinted, which means the few copies left on the market end up being more expensive.
What most people don't consider is that studios drastically cut back on DVD production, so now whatever's left in inventory has much higher profit margins to make up for it. When something's made in huge volumes, the per-unit cost goes down; when barely anyone's manufacturing them, each unit has to bear all the fixed costs. It's like when you stop making something but still need to recover what you've already invested in the production line.
