Why did my microbiome test results seem so different from last year?

I did one of those gut microbiome tests from Everlywell back in 2024 and got some interesting results about my bacterial diversity. Decided to do another one recently just to see if anything changed, but the results look completely different even though I haven't made major diet changes. Are these tests actually that variable, or is there something else going on?

Did you change anything about *how* you collected the sample or when you took it? Gut microbiome tests are genuinely pretty variable - the bacteria in your gut shift based on what you ate that week, any stress you've been under, whether you were sick recently, even the time of day you collected the sample. The tests themselves also have some measurement noise built in, so two samples taken months apart will almost always look noticeably different even if your overall gut health is stable. If you want to spot real trends, most people need to do this kind of testing multiple times over a longer stretch and look for patterns rather than comparing just two snapshots.

The timing of sample collection matters way more than people realize - I've seen wild swings just from taking one the morning after a heavy meal versus a normal day. Even minor stuff like antibiotics, a stomach bug you might've forgotten about, or honestly just stress can shift your results significantly. One thing that helped me make sense of mine was keeping a food diary for a week *before* testing next time, then doing the same collection method at the exact same time of day both years. These commercial tests have real limitations too - the lab processing can vary, and you're basically getting a snapshot of one moment rather than a true picture of your baseline, so expecting consistency between tests a year apart might be setting yourself up for confusion.
