Why do my eyes hurt and get blurry after sitting at the computer for long periods?

I work in an office almost all day in front of a monitor. By the end of the day my eyes get red, tired, and sometimes they even start to double. I heard this is some kind of syndrome. Is it dangerous for my vision or will it go away on its own over time?

It's computer vision syndrome, and yeah, you need to do something about your eyes - it won't go away on its own, if anything it'll get worse. The double vision especially suggests your eye muscles are overworked and can't focus properly. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something far away for 20 seconds at a distance of 20 feet (about 6 meters), plus adjust your monitor brightness, distance from the screen, and chair height so you're looking slightly downward.

But if that doesn't help and the double vision keeps going - you should see an ophthalmologist. They'll check it out and find something specific for you: you might need computer glasses or lenses with blue light protection. Either way, you shouldn't mess around with your eyes.

Have you tried just stepping away from the monitor and looking out the window? It sounds obvious, but it really works, because the problem isn't so much the screen itself, but the fact that your eyes are constantly strained at the same distance. When you look far away, the muscles relax. The double vision appears precisely because those muscles can no longer contract in sync - they're just exhausted.

It won't go away on its own, I agree with the previous answer. But even if you don't do anything, your vision won't drop drastically - it'll most likely just stay at this level of discomfort and fatigue. Here's what really helps: every hour, get up and look at something distant for about five minutes. Don't just get distracted, actually focus on far objects. Plus blink more often - people blink way less at the monitor than normally, and the tear film dries out.

There's also a life hack - if possible, dim the lights in your office and don't keep your monitor brightness at maximum. The contrast between a bright screen and the dark surroundings is a separate source of eye strain. And if the double vision doesn't go away even after breaks, you should see an ophthalmologist - you might need glasses for computer work.

Кристина_80 asker Thanks for the tip about the window, I'll do that. I'm still going to see an ophthalmologist though - the double vision can get pretty intense sometimes, and I want to make sure there's nothing serious going on.

In the office, after long days staring at the monitor, I've noticed this redness and fatigue myself. Besides taking breaks and looking into the distance, the right distance from the screen helps too - if the monitor is too close or positioned too high, your focus gets strained even more, and the double vision gets worse. Maybe it's worth checking your desk height and how far you're sitting from the screen?
