Why does my phone battery drain so fast even though I barely use it?

I bought a new Samsung Galaxy back in August, and since then I've noticed that sometimes the battery drops to 20% within 8 hours, even though I only scroll occasionally or make a quick call here and there. Only the normal apps are running in the background. Is this due to background processes, or is the battery already wearing out that fast after just a couple of months?

After a few months, a modern battery usually doesn't wear down that drastically - it's more likely pointing to background processes. Check your settings under "Battery" or "Device Care" to see which apps are draining the most power - it's often Google Services, social media apps, or location-based services that keep running. Try disabling GPS, Bluetooth, and location history when you don't need them, and see if a particular app is using an unusual amount of power. If that doesn't help and the problem's been there since you bought it, it could also be a faulty software installation - in that case, a factory reset would help before you take it to service.

Go to Developer Options (hidden under "About Phone," tap the Build Number seven times) and check "Battery Optimization" to see which apps aren't optimized - Samsung often excludes its own apps from this, and they tend to work like crazy in the background. One practical trick a lot of people miss: go into Notification Settings and disable "Show Live Information" for all apps except the ones you actually need - that drains surprisingly much battery.

On your phone, Samsung Members or the daily device diagnostics could also be running in the background constantly scanning your RAM. Also try switching your screen refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz if you haven't already - that often makes the biggest difference on newer Samsungs. If it's still going wild after these checks, I'd update your software to the latest version if you haven't done that yet.
