Why does Windows 11 ask me for my password every time I start up?

Ever since I updated to Windows 11 a few months ago, it keeps asking me to enter the password every damn time I turn on the computer. This didn't happen in Windows 10 before. Is this normal or did I accidentally change something in the settings?

Is your computer connected to a Microsoft account or a local one? The thing is, Windows 11 really tightened up security, but there's a detail most people miss: if your computer is on a corporate domain or you have certain group policies enabled, the system will ask for your password no matter what, even if you change the sign-in settings. Check if in Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options you have "Require sign-in" enabled under "Privacy and security" - you can disable it there, but I'm telling you, if it's under domain control or you have Windows 11 Pro with policies applied, it won't help much.

Windows 11 turned on the password requirement by default when starting up, which was more flexible in Windows 10. You probably didn't change anything; it's just that Microsoft made it stricter in this version, but you can turn it off if you go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and disable "Require sign-in".

What nobody mentions is that if your computer is connected to a domain network (pretty common in companies), Windows 11 will ask for your password no matter what, but at home with a local or Microsoft account you've got options. Try going to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and look for the "Sign-in requirement" option; right there you can adjust whether you want it to ask you every time or only in certain situations. If none of that rings a bell and you only have a basic local account, it's weird that it keeps insisting every time unless you accidentally turned something on in your security settings.
