Atkins worked for a lot of people because cutting carbs makes you lose weight pretty fast, especially at first, so your aunt might've actually gotten real results.

The thing is, it was clearly a fad, and after a while people got tired of eating nothing but meat and cheese every day (spoiler alert: it gets boring).

Now people talk more about stuff like intermittent fasting or just normal balanced eating, but honestly low-carb diets still exist, they just go by different names.

It's true that a lot of people got results at first, but the problem is it required insane discipline long-term - cutting out basically all carbs for years, that's weird and it just gets tiring. Then doctors also started questioning whether it was actually healthy as a long-term diet, so it lost its appeal compared to the more "flexible" approaches we see now.
