It really depends more on your partner than on the occasion. Some people enjoy having something tangible that reminds them of that moment every time they see it, while others value shared memories from an experience much more. The ideal thing is to think about what they're missing or what makes them happier: if they're someone who gets bored easily or always wants to do new things, the experience will definitely win out; if they prefer enjoying things at home or they collect stuff, a physical gift is the better choice. Honestly, you can also combine both: a trip or dinner where you give them something that makes sense for that moment.

I think the question shouldn't be "experience or thing" but rather "what combines the best of both". Because the drama of choosing just one is that you end up regretting it, you know? If you give only the experience, boom, it's over and all that's left are photos. If you give only an object, it might end up being something they don't use or that gets forgotten in a drawer. What really works after 5 years together is putting both things into the equation somehow, even if it's in a creative way.

What nobody mentions is the risk that the experience turns out to be a flop because there are factors outside your control (weather, crowds, the place being closed that day, the other person not being in the mood). A nice trip can turn into a logistical disaster and then your gift backfires. An object, even if it's more "simple", guarantees it'll at least exist forever. But you shouldn't get obsessed with tangible stuff either, obviously.

My suggestion: why not a physical gift that has to do with an experience or that creates one? A nice space to live something together, something they'll use in the future to do things. Or give the experience but pair it with something small that represents it (a souvenir from the place, something related to it). What matters is that after 5 years your partner feels like what you gave them is for you two, not just a "checkmark" on your anniversary 😊

Marta Martinez asker Thanks for the advice. I think combining both things is a good idea, especially getting an object that represents the experience. I'll think about it that way.

The interesting thing is that this question almost always gets framed as a dilemma when really the true factor is in the combination. A meaningful physical gift will last for years, sure, but it loses emotional weight if that's all there is to it. An experience is incredible in the moment but fades fast if there's nothing tangible to go with it. What actually works is finding something that's both things at once: a short trip where you also give them something that'll last (a piece of jewelry, a watch, a painting that reminds them of that place), or a special dinner somewhere cool where you give them something meaningful for that moment.

What I'd really recommend is thinking about what kind of memories your partner tends to value more in their day-to-day life. If they're someone who's constantly looking at their phone or their home, an object they'll see often works better. If they're more about being out, enjoying the moment and then talking about it, the experience is what'll really hook them. But honestly, for five years together it's worth making an effort that's memorable in both ways. It's not hard to find that middle ground.
