What's your tap water like - just bad-tasting or are there visible issues like rust and smell?
That determines what actually makes sense to buy. If your water is just hard or slightly cloudy, a simple pitcher filter will do - cheap, no installation needed, you swap out the cartridge every month or two. But they're slow and the marketing hype is way bigger than what they actually filter. If the problems are more serious - rust, sediment, weird smell - then you need an under-sink or faucet-mounted filter.
Under-sink is the more serious option: you drill a hole in the countertop, install a separate faucet, get a multi-stage system. It costs more but works way better and flows faster. On-faucet is simpler - you just twist it on and hang it straight on the spout, no installation needed, but it takes up space and is slower. Before buying, check if the cartridge is compatible with your plumbing system: there are standard ones, but manufacturers love their own sizes.
Most important thing - don't buy online without checking reviews. I'm skeptical about all this myself, but people really do write in the comments whether the filter actually helps or if the water just flows slower. And don't believe the fancy packaging with stars - look at real reviews, that's where you can see how long the cartridge actually lasts.
Before buying any filter, you should get your water tested - many labs offer this cheaply or even free if you contact your building management company. Otherwise you risk buying a filter that won't solve your problem at all, because hard water and rust require different approaches.
If you don't want to fuss with it - a universal option is a pitcher filter like Barrier or Geyser, it handles any medium-level problems. But here's what people often forget: you need to change the cartridges exactly when the instructions say to, not when the water starts smelling - by that point the filter's already working against you and can make things worse. Set a phone reminder if you're too lazy to keep track yourself.
