Most streaming services let you scrub through a movie at 5-10x speed, so you can actually watch the full thing in 15-20 minutes and decide if the story grabs you. Sounds weird but it works - you get the plot, pacing, and tone without the time commitment. If it bores you at that speed, it'll definitely bore you normal speed.
Beyond that, aggregate scores matter way more than individual reviews. Look at IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes - not just the number, but the actual spread. If a movie's got 7.2/10 on IMDb with thousands of votes, that's more reliable than five wildly different opinions. Also pay attention to what critics specifically disliked. If they say "slow burn" and you hate slow burns, that's your answer right there. User reviews on streaming apps themselves can be helpful too since those tend to be from people like you, not critics with different taste.
The honest thing is you won't get it perfect. But checking the premise, reading 3-4 reviews that mention specifics (not just "great" or "trash"), and maybe spotting a scene or two will narrow it down enough. You'll still occasionally pick a dud, but way less often than guessing blind.
