How do I transition into veterinary medicine as a career changer?

Thomas Turner AU 🔍 Enthusiast 👁 54 ⚑ Report Professions

I'm 32 and currently work in office administration, but I've always wanted to work with animals. I know vet school requires prerequisites and takes years. Should I go back to school full-time, or are there other roles in the veterinary field I could pivot into more quickly while figuring out if this is really what I want?

Vet school doesn't have to be your only path forward, and honestly exploring adjacent roles first makes a lot of sense at 32. Veterinary technician programs are typically 2 years instead of 8, vet assistant positions often need no formal credentials, and some places hire for kennel work or reception with minimal experience - any of those would let you see if the day-to-day reality clicks for you before committing to prerequisites and full vet school.
