The connection quality matters too. If you're close to the router with a strong signal, your phone basically whispers the data. If you're on the other side of the house with walls in the way and a weak signal, the device automatically cranks up the power to compensate, and that's when it uses more. But even in that worst-case scenario, it's still generally more efficient than relying on mobile data because the total distance is shorter.
