So I bought some Ethereum a couple of years ago on Metamask and kept it in the wallet, but I switched phones and forgot the seed phrase. I can't access it anymore. Is there a way to recover the tokens or are they lost for good?
The seed phrase is literally the only thing that matters: without it, your tokens are basically unreachable. There's no "password reset" or backdoor like on Gmail, because the blockchain doesn't have centralized servers that can help you. If you wrote it down somewhere - on paper, email, old messages, notes from your previous phone - that's your only lifeline. Check everywhere you can think of, even weird places like scattered notes lying around.
If you really can't find it anywhere, I'm sorry to say it but your tokens stay in the wallet on the blockchain, but you can't access them. Technically they still exist, it's just that the private key (derived from the seed) is the only thing that would give them to you, and without that you're locked out. There are no companies that can "unlock" a Metamask wallet or recover your funds for you, because they don't have access to anything.
The only remote hope is if Metamask itself has a recovery feature via email or cloud backup that you had enabled two years ago, but from your description it doesn't sound like it. Check your old account settings anyway if you can still access them. Otherwise, unfortunately it's a costly lesson learned: going forward, your seed phrase needs to be kept in a secure physical location, like a safe, never just digitally.
