I've been through this and it's frustrating as hell 😅 The previous answer about 2.4 GHz is solid, but I'm gonna add something that saved me: sometimes the app gets buggy and won't connect the plug even if the Wi-Fi is fine. Try uninstalling the app completely, restart your phone, and then install it again. Don't just delete and reinstall quickly - leave it uninstalled for a few minutes.
Another thing a lot of people don't try is checking if your router is blocking the plug. Some routers have MAC address filters or whitelists for allowed devices. Go into your router settings (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the browser) and see if something's preventing new devices from connecting. If you've got device access control turned on, add the plug to the whitelist or disable it temporarily while you're connecting.
If it still doesn't work, take a photo of the exact model and serial number on the plug (it's usually on the bottom) - sometimes older versions of Kasa have known bugs with certain routers. Worth searching for your specific model before wasting more time 🤷
