Ways to speed up your laptop
Hey guys, my laptop is totally dead, it's slow as a turtle. What are some actually working ways to speed it up? Is this gonna be an expensive repair?

If your laptop isn't just slow but has basically ground to a halt, check if the system is clogged with dust - that's a common reason why slowdowns start happening not from software but from overheating. Open up the laptop from the bottom (usually unscrews easily), take a look at the fan and heatsink - if there's a felt of dust there, just clean it out with compressed air. It's free, takes 15 minutes, and the effect can be pretty noticeable.
If the dust situation is fine, then yeah, those methods that were already mentioned help - cleaning up disk space, disabling autostart. But keep in mind: if your laptop is already five or six years old, the problem might also be a worn-out hard drive, and in that case swapping it for an SSD really works wonders and costs practically nothing these days.
First try without spending money. Clean up your disk - delete old programs you don't use, clear out your Downloads folder, sort out autostart (in Task Manager under the "Startup" tab - turn off everything unnecessary). This usually gives a noticeable speed boost. Second - run an antivirus check, there might be a virus eating up your resources. Third - check what processes are bogging down your system (Task Manager, "Processes" tab), maybe some background service is acting up. Often a fresh Windows reinstall helps if you've had it installed for a long time.
If that doesn't work, then you're looking at more serious stuff. Replacing your hard drive with an SSD - that's a genuinely game-changing upgrade, you'll feel the difference right away. It's pretty cheap compared to the cost of a new laptop. If your memory's full, adding more RAM can also help, especially if you see in Task Manager that RAM is maxed out at 80-90%.
Last option - reinstalling with a clean slate or even Linux if you're willing to switch operating systems. But usually you don't need to go that far - in 90% of cases either a cleanup or an SSD swap does the trick.
"Dead" is putting it strongly - usually a laptop just gets cluttered and starts choking! I had something similar happen - bought a secondhand one, and it turned out the previous owner had basically cached half the internet on it. I did a proper cleanup once: completely reinstalled Windows, got the disk back to normal - and the machine came back to life like new! Didn't need any repairs, the software was just in terrible shape.
If a full reinstall is too much for you, try at least defragging your SSD (unless you don't have an SSD - then you don't need to), delete all the old programs you don't use, and check if there's any malware with a good antivirus like Kaspersky or Bitdefender. A lot of the time slowdowns aren't hardware issues - it's just garbage clogging up the system!
