I've been through plenty of dishwasher tablets over the years, and honestly the difference isn't as big as the marketing makes it seem. Own-brand tablets from the supermarket work just fine for everyday dishes. They've got basically the same active ingredients - enzymes, detergents, rinse aids - that break down food and grease. The main thing is they're cheaper because you're not paying for all the advertising and fancy packaging. I use them on the farm all the time and my dishes come out clean.

The branded stuff like Finish or Cascade might have slightly better formulations or extra features - some claim better stain removal or faster dissolving - but you're paying a premium for that reputation and the research they've done. They might perform marginally better on really stubborn, baked-on food, but if you're rinsing your plates before loading (which you should anyway), it's hardly noticeable. Some people swear by certain brands and that's fair enough, but I think a lot of it is just habit.

My advice? Start with the own-brand tablets. If you find your dishes aren't coming out clean or you're getting spotting, then maybe switch to a branded option. But most folks will be perfectly happy saving the extra quid and putting it toward something more worthwhile - like a decent paddle for kayaking instead of some overpriced tablet. Just use the right amount of water in your machine and keep the filter clean, and you'll be fine either way.

As mentioned above, the performance gap is pretty minimal - studies show own-brand tablets clean just as effectively in most cases, though branded ones might have slightly better rinse additives (around 2-3% difference in actual results). You're mainly paying for packaging and advertising with the big names, so if your water hardness is moderate to soft, own-brand will save you 40-50% without real consequences.
