Basically, discs are those round platters you see when you take off the wheel, and the pads press against them to brake. Drums are like a hollow cylinder inside the wheel where some shoes expand inside to brake. Discs are more effective because they cool down better and don't fade as easily, which is why almost all modern cars have them up front, even though some still use drums in the back. Honestly, I prefer discs, they're way easier to change and they last longer.
