What techniques do artists use to mix colors correctly?

I've been trying to paint with acrylics for a few months now and my colors always end up kind of opaque or they don't look like I expected. I watch videos where painters mix colors and it comes out perfect, but I struggle to get those tones right. Is there some trick I'm missing?

What's probably happening is that you're using too much water or mixing your colors directly on the palette without any organized method. With acrylics, the key is to start with very little pigment and add color gradually, because they dry fast and lose intensity if you stir them for too long. The amount of water matters too: if you add too much, the colors end up transparent and dull.

One thing that helps is mixing your two base tones first, and then if you need to adjust the brightness or darkness, do it with a third color. Those videos where everything comes out "perfect" - almost always it's because those artists already know exactly how much water and pigment they need. It's experience more than magic. Try working with smaller palettes, do test runs on separate paper before putting it on your actual piece, and don't stir any more than necessary.

The problem is almost always the water-to-pigment ratio, so first thing, try drastically reducing the water when you're mixing. With acrylics you need a consistency like cream, not watery, so the tones come out vibrant and opaque. Also, if you want specific tones, mix two base colors first on your palette, check the result on a separate piece of paper before applying, and only then adjust by adding more of one or the other - that way you avoid those muddy mixes that happen when you try everything at once in the same spot.
