Depends on how much space you have in your kitchen and what you usually store :) Side-by-side takes up more space widthwise, but it's more convenient for a family, while a French door is more compact and works well if you need a big freezer.
I recently ran into the choice between these types when I was looking for a fridge for my apartment, and here's what I figured out. Side-by-Side really does take up a lot of space and money, but there's one thing people often miss - the freezer in these fridges is usually narrow and deep, which is annoying if you buy a lot of frozen stuff and are constantly digging around looking for what you need. The French door setup (when the freezer is at the bottom or in the middle) just saves the day in that regard.
And I also noticed that if you cook fresh food a lot and keep a bunch of vegetables, greens, dairy - French door is more convenient because the fridge section is spacious and deep, easier to organize the space. Plus the doors take up less room when you open them, which matters if your kitchen is narrow or the stove is right there.
what's your kitchen size anyway? and do you have a big family or just one or two people? that'll help figure out if you really need the width of a side-by-side or if you should go for something more compact.
I've got a Side-by-Side, and at first it seemed like overkill to me, but then I realized - when you're on the road a lot like I am, it's convenient to buy fresh stuff along the way without worrying about space. If your kitchen is less than 2.5 meters wide, a French door fridge is more practical, but keep in mind that vegetables in it freeze faster because they're close to the freezer, so you need to move things around periodically.
