File indexing, automatic updates, and background apps slow things down the most - they eat up your CPU and disk even when you're not doing anything. You can disable them, but whether it's worth it depends on your hardware: on a decent PC it won't help much, but on an old laptop you'll actually feel the difference. The main thing is don't mess with system processes blindly or you risk breaking something important; it's easier to just disable specific apps from startup and services you definitely don't need.
