Don't assume you just need to push through it - sometimes your gut genuinely isn't ready for a particular strain or dosage, and forcing it can make things worse. That said, what you're experiencing is textbook die-off reaction (sometimes called the Jarisch-Herxheimer effect), where your beneficial bacteria are killing off bad bacteria and the byproducts cause temporary bloating and gas. It's annoying but usually harmless and fades within a few days to a couple weeks.

The tricky part nobody mentions: quality and strain variety matter way more than people realize. Your friend's probiotic might work perfectly for her microbiome while yours rebels against it, or the brand you picked could have strains that just don't mesh well with your specific gut flora. It's not necessarily a bad batch - it's just compatibility. If you want to keep going, try cutting the dose in half for a week or two and see if symptoms ease up. If they don't improve after another week at the lower dose, or they get worse, stop and maybe try a different brand with different strains. You could also ask your doctor which strains are usually well-tolerated if you want something backed by a bit more guidance 🍄

Did you change your diet or anything else around the same time you started the probiotics? The bloating and gas you're describing is actually pretty common when you first start - your gut bacteria are shifting and your system needs time to adjust, usually a few weeks. Some people do have genuine reactions to specific strains though, so if it doesn't settle down after another week or two, trying a different brand might help. Worth checking with a doctor if it gets worse or doesn't improve, but don't assume a bad batch just yet.

Patrick_29 asker Thanks for that. No diet changes - just the probiotics. I'll give it another week or two and see if it settles.

It's not necessarily a bad batch - what you're describing happens to a lot of people, but here's the thing others missed: you might be taking way too high a dose for where your gut is right now. Start with the smallest dose possible, even if it seems weak, and give it 3 - 4 weeks instead of 2. If you're still miserable after that, try a different strain or stop altogether - some people's guts just don't play well with certain probiotics, and that's fine. Before you do anything, check if you actually need probiotics in the first place or if there's an underlying issue worth discussing with a doctor.
