Why does my wireless earbud keep disconnecting from my phone?

I've got a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro that I got last year, and lately they keep dropping connection randomly even though my phone is right next to me. It happens mostly when I'm at work or on the bus. Already tried re-pairing them and clearing the Bluetooth cache, but nothing's working.

I had this exact problem with mine and it turned out my phone's Bluetooth was trying to stay connected to like three other devices at once - my car, an old speaker I'd forgotten about, my smartwatch. Once I removed those ghost pairings from my phone's Bluetooth settings, the Galaxy Buds stopped dropping out! Give that a shot before assuming it's the earbuds themselves.

Reset the buds themselves, not just your phone. Most disconnection issues come from the earbuds' firmware or internal state getting corrupted, not the pairing itself. On Galaxy Buds2 Pro, hold the button on the case for about 10 seconds until the LED flashes red and white - that's a full factory reset. Then re-pair from scratch. I'd also check if you're running the latest firmware on both the buds and your phone through the Galaxy Wearable app, since Samsung pushes updates that fix stability issues pretty regularly.

The environment matters way more than people realize though. Work offices and buses are often packed with WiFi networks and other Bluetooth devices competing for the same 2.4GHz spectrum - it's the same frequency as microwaves and tons of other stuff. If the disconnects happen consistently in one location but not at home, interference is almost certainly the culprit. You can't really fix that except by moving away from the source or, if you've got control, asking whoever manages your work WiFi to adjust their router placement.

One more thing to try: disable and re-enable Bluetooth on your phone, then check the Galaxy Buds2 Pro settings in the Wearable app for any power saving modes or connection optimization options that might be enabled. Sometimes the phone's battery saver or aggressive Bluetooth power management kicks in and causes drops. If none of this works after a full reset and firmware update, the buds themselves might be aging - batteries degrade and can cause connection instability after about 18-24 months of heavy use.

Interference from other Bluetooth devices or WiFi networks at work/on the bus could be pushing your buds off - have you noticed if it happens more in specific locations, or does it seem random everywhere? Sometimes even just moving away from crowded areas temporarily can tell you if that's the culprit.

the bus connection issue is worth paying attention to - that's a classic sign of interference, since you've got dozens of phones and routers packed into one space all broadcasting on the 2.4ghz band that bluetooth uses. my earbuds were dropping constantly during my commute until i noticed they'd stay connected fine once i got to the office, which confirmed it wasn't the buds themselves but the environment. before you assume hardware failure, try using them in a quiet area like your house for a full day and see if they're stable, then test again at work - if the problem disappears indoors and comes back on the bus, you know it's interference and not a pairing problem. if they still disconnect everywhere, then yeah the reset others mentioned is your next move.
