Why does TikTok keep recommending videos about a topic I'm no longer interested in?

I've been watching makeup videos on TikTok for like three months and now I want to stop because I'm bored of them, but the algorithm doesn't get it. I dislike them, I don't like them, I try to change my interests... but it keeps filling my For You page with the same stuff. Is there any way to reset my recommendations or do I have to create a new account?

TikTok's algorithm relies a lot on how much time you spend watching a certain type of content, so three months is pretty long for it to consider that your main preference. What works better is actively changing your behavior: when makeup videos show up, swipe past them without watching the whole thing, search for and like other topics you're actually interested in (sports, comedy, whatever), and use the "not interested" option that appears when you long-press a video. That gives the algorithm way more signals than just stopping your interaction does. You don't need to create a new account; with a week or two of actively watching other content it should start changing what it recommends to you, but you have to be consistent so it understands your tastes have changed.
