Why is my Pokémon GO lagging so much since the latest update?

Since the new update two weeks ago, I keep getting FPS drops and the app just freezes. My phone is a relatively new Samsung Galaxy A55, so it should run smoothly without any problems. Is anyone else experiencing this and how did you fix it?

Before you reinstall the app, I'd check the developer options on your phone - you can limit the refresh rate there if it's automatically set to 120 Hz on the Galaxy A55. Pokémon Go sometimes doesn't handle that well and that's exactly what causes these fps drops. Turn the rate down to 60 Hz and see if it runs better - lots of people report that makes the difference. If that doesn't help, you can always do a fresh install, but it's usually solved faster than you'd think.

Try completely uninstalling the app and reinstalling it from scratch first - not just the update, but actually uninstall it and redownload it from the Play Store. That often fixes weird bugs that get stuck during updates. Before you do that, make sure to link your account (Google or Niantic ID) so you don't lose your progress.

If that doesn't help, check if you have other apps running in the background that are eating up memory or CPU. For me it turned out that an old weather app was constantly syncing and that's why Pokémon Go was lagging. Also check your phone storage - if you have less than 2-3 GB free, the app can act weird even on newer phones. You don't really need a RAM cleaner though, that's pretty much just placebo.

Otherwise I'd reduce the graphics settings in the app itself. The A55 isn't weak or anything, but Pokémon Go is a badly optimized app. Less effects, lower resolution - try that out before you think your phone is the problem. And yeah, other people report stuff like this regularly after updates, so you're not alone with it.

Have you already checked if you have enough storage space on your phone? The Galaxy A55 is new and all, but if the internal storage is too full, pretty much every app lags like crazy. That happens to me all the time at home when I let too many screenshots and videos pile up 😅 Try freeing up a couple of GB and then see if it runs better - usually that's easier than reinstalling the app.

I'd actually first check whether the app itself is the problem or your phone is hitting its limits - the Galaxy A55 has decent power, but Pokémon Go is a pretty heavy resource hog and you might have something else running in the background at the same time. Check your settings under "Apps" to see how much RAM the app is actually using right now, and close all the other apps you don't need before you play. If that doesn't help, you can always go ahead with a complete reinstall after that - but often it's enough to just clear the app's cache data (don't uninstall it, just go to "Storage" > "Clear cache"), that's less of a hassle.
