Air conditioner constantly switches to defrost mode, doesn't cool at all

I have an inverter Haier air conditioner that's been installed for about three years now. In July I turn it on - it works normally for about 15 minutes, then it switches to defrost mode on its own and stays there for 20-30 minutes. Then it tries to cool again. The room isn't getting cooled, the temperature stays the same. Could it be a refrigerant leak or is the sensor acting up?

The defrost mode activates when ice builds up on the outdoor unit - that's a normal thing under certain conditions, but frequent defrost cycles point to a problem.
