Most AC filters can be cleaned in less than 10 minutes, it's really straightforward. You can start by turning off the unit, then pull out the filter (usually there's an easy-to-open panel) and vacuum up the dust with a vacuum cleaner. If it's really dirty, a rinse with lukewarm water and a bit of mild soap does the trick, but make sure to let it dry completely before putting it back in. I do it every month in summer, and it seriously makes a difference to energy consumption and air quality 😊

Don't forget to actually cut the power to your AC before you take the filter out, because it's not just scary - it's dangerous. Once the filter's out, you can vacuum it or rinse it with lukewarm water depending on the type, but don't wring it out like a dishcloth - lots of people do that and then it doesn't work right. If it's really dirty, soak it a bit in soapy water, then let it dry completely before putting it back in, otherwise you'll end up growing mold inside there.
