I've been collecting movies on physical media for years and my shelves are getting out of control. Some people seem to have these perfectly organized systems - alphabetical, by genre, by year? What actually works best without driving yourself crazy updating it constantly?
don't go full alphabetical unless you're ready to spend weekends reorganizing every time you add new stuff - it's a trap. most people who stick with it long-term do genre first (action, comedy, drama, etc.), then alphabetize within those sections. that way you're only reshuffling a smaller pocket of shelves when something new comes in. some folks throw in a secondary sort by year or director within genres if they're really into it, but honestly the genre + alpha combo feels like the sweet spot where it stays manageable without becoming tedious maintenance work.
