Don't take it as mockery just because you're not used to emojis. Honestly, most people use them sincerely to express how they feel, and it's actually a pretty cool way to communicate. Me, I just respond naturally without overthinking it - if someone sends me a smiley emoji, it's just their way of saying they're happy, that's all.
I think there's a lot of nuance to consider here. It's true that a lot of people use emojis sincerely, but when you get something like "ok 😊" from someone you don't know super well, it's easy to wonder if it's really well-meaning or just... surface-level politeness.
Personally, I realized I had weird reactions to emojis for a long time, like I saw them as potentially condescending. But actually, it's mostly a matter of context and the person. If it's someone you believe is sincere, an emoji can really humanize a written message. It shows you the person isn't just typing out something robotic. Now I really try not to overanalyze every emoji someone sends me, because yeah, nine times out of ten it's just someone trying to make the message a bit warmer.
The only situation where I'll really start questioning things is when the tone of the message is completely at odds with the emoji. Like a harsh message with a heart next to it, then I genuinely don't get it. But an emoji on its own or in a matching context? That's probably honest.
