How to stop getting tagged in photos I don't want shared?

My friends keep tagging me in unflattering photos on Instagram and Facebook without asking first. I've tried adjusting privacy settings but I still see them pop up in my feed and get notifications. Is there a way to prevent people from tagging me altogether, or at least approve tags before they go live?

Both Instagram and Facebook let you review tags before they appear on your profile - look for "tag review" or "tag approval" in your privacy settings, which will send pending tags to you for acceptance or rejection before they're visible. You can also untag yourself from individual photos, and on Instagram you can adjust notification settings so you're not alerted every time someone tags you. If you want to go further, you can restrict who can tag you in photos through your tagging preferences, though the exact options vary between platforms and they do change fairly often.

The tag review setting is solid, but if you want to go further, you can also untag yourself from photos after they're posted - just click the tag notification and remove your name from it. Beyond that, there's no way to block tagging entirely across both platforms, so your best move is to actually talk to your friends about it. Most people don't realize they're being annoying when they tag unflattering shots; a quick "hey, can you check with me before posting photos of me?" usually works way better than quietly adjusting settings.
