It really varies from kid to kid, but generally you should wait until he stays dry at night for several weeks in a row before you try it. A lot of kids aren't ready before 3-4 years old, and it's totally normal not to push it before the right time comes.
The real thing is there's no magic age - some kids are ready at 2 and a half, others at 4, and it's not about laziness or developmental delays. What really matters is that your child stays dry through the night regularly for at least a few weeks, not just once or twice by chance. If it seems like he's got control during the day and he's not waking up wet often enough, it might still be too early.
