If you've been together for almost 8 years and own a house together, you've already made the big decisions as a couple anyway - so a proposal from you isn't unromantic, it's just honest. You could also talk to him beforehand about how important this is to you instead of going down on one knee right away. Some guys just need a little push to take action themselves, others don't even realize how much it means to you. The most important thing is that you're both actually into it and it's not about outside social pressure.
